Our story

When I started Fair World Fabric, I set out to bring global fabrics home to my sewing community here in Australia.

A few years ago, my partner and I said goodbye to the daily grind and set off to travel the world. I had been sewing for five years by this point and I was dreaming of discovering new fabrics and sewing techniques as we traveled and explored.

My dreams came true one day searching through a market in downtown Kampala, Uganda, where I came across some of the most beautiful, colourful, and unique fabrics I have ever seen. I found out these fabrics are called kitenge, a style of East Africa fabric that reflects the culture, land and colours of life in East Africa. I was smitten.

At this point Fair World Fabric was just a loose idea in the back of my mind… an idea to share and celebrate the diversity of beautiful textiles from around the world with my community here in Australia.

I took a gamble, bought an armful of fabrics and headed to the nearest post office in Kampala to send them home to Australia. They arrived, waiting for me when I got back home a few months later, and Fair World Fabric was born.

East Africa was far from our last stop, and we carried on to travel through India, Sri Lanka, the Middle East, South East Asia, and more. Everywhere we went I found a new style of fabric that took my breath away.

While I was falling in love with these beautiful textiles, I couldn't ignore the challenges faced by everyday people who make and use these fabrics, especially women and children who are disproportionately affected by poverty in this rapidly changing world.

That's why I pledged that a portion of all profits from fabric sales goes towards supporting impactful, on the ground organizations working to break the cycle of generational poverty in the countries where we source our fabric. We support organizations focused on providing skills and education to those who need it most. We're doing our bit, one meter of fabric at a time.

Fair World Fabric has been up and running now since 2024 and we are exceptionally proud to be working with suppliers from all over the world to bring beautiful, quality fabrics to Australia and donating a portion of all profits.
